Choose the denominator

A pack can contain complete pens, spare cartridges or several colors. Count each category before calculating unit price. The selected LR7-A is one refill, while BL77-A is one complete pen. Both are writing supplies, but they do not provide the same physical contents. The Handy-Line four-pack counts complete highlighters, not four replacement cartridges.

A hypothetical kit example

Suppose an explicitly listed hypothetical kit contains two pen bodies and two spare refills. It has two immediately complete pens and two spare ink units. A total of four physical items would be a poor denominator for a price per complete pen. This example illustrates bookkeeping only; we have not verified a named kit with those contents or assigned it a real price.

Do not infer from a photo

Read the actual package description and selected variant. A product photo may display spare parts, color options or multiple views of one item. It cannot establish package count when the text is unclear. Ask the seller for the number of bodies, refills and each needed color before treating a listing as a cheaper bulk offer.

A clear comparison line

A useful comparison line contains exact SKU, selected color or assortment, complete-body count, refill count, total pack price and check date. Add actual delivery and tax when known. Keep an unknown field unknown rather than guessing the most favorable denominator. The tool refuses fractional package counts because a normal retail pack is ordered as a whole unit.

A common denominator check

Before comparing two pack prices, ask what a counted item means in each offer. One complete pen and one refill are both single physical objects but different supplies. Use a separate complete-body denominator or refill denominator where appropriate. A generic per-piece headline can hide that difference and make a mixed kit look misleadingly cheap.

Assortments add another count

A four-piece assortment may include fewer than four of a needed color. Count those required-color items explicitly for an allocation comparison. If the exact composition is unknown, the color-specific cost is unknown too. The calculator lets you enter a confirmed denominator; it does not inspect a listing or discover missing package contents.

Before you decide

  • Keep the exact selected SKU, color and selling unit
  • Check current maker scope and the actual seller offer
  • Separate your assumptions from measured performance
