Three relevant official prices

The checked US prices were $3.25 for one black BL77-A complete pen and $1.43 for one black LR7-A refill. Pentel lists BL77 as supported by LR7. These observations make a replacement-cost comparison possible for a functioning compatible body. They do not show that any pen body in your drawer can accept that cartridge.

A merchandise-only difference

The displayed merchandise difference is $3.25-$1.43=$1.82. That is a price difference between two selling units, not measured lifetime savings or cost per written page. Delivery, quantity discounts and the condition of the existing body can change the actual order decision. Our reference does not assign a guaranteed number of successful refill cycles to a pen.

The missing replacement assumptions

If the existing body is lost or damaged, a refill does not replace its clip, grip or mechanism. If the body model is unknown, the low refill price does not resolve compatibility. Identify the body and consult the exact maker relationship before comparing replacement options. We do not offer a modification procedure or a cross-brand fit claim.

Use the fit evidence first

For budgeting, record the number of complete pens and the number of refills separately. A kit containing one pen and one spare refill contains two ink units but one pen body. Do not divide a kit price by two and label the result as a price per complete pen. Confirm the exact included quantities from the selected package.

Compare a defined replacement event

A one-time refill versus new-pen comparison can use the observed $1.43 and $3.25 once fit and body condition are established. A five-year ownership comparison would need additional evidence about replacement frequency, body condition and prices over time. We do not multiply today price difference into a claimed long-term saving without those inputs.

Keep a full pen available if required

A spare cartridge cannot serve as a second complete pen at an event or in a kit unless a suitable body is also present. In an allocation plan, count bodies and cartridges separately. A lower ink-unit cost is not evidence that a refill-only order meets a target for ready-to-use complete pens.

Before you decide

  • Keep the exact selected SKU, color and selling unit
  • Check current maker scope and the actual seller offer
  • Separate your assumptions from measured performance
